Your Guide to Non-Traditional First Dance Songs

Raise your hands if you’re tired of hearing “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran at weddings? (I am!) If you raised your hand, this is for you!  Why is a first dance song so special? It’s the song you two have labeled “yours/ours.” Whenever people hear it, they will think of your wedding day.

Here are some tips/questions to ask yourself on how to choose your first dance song:

  • Question: What’s the vibe are we wanting?

Ex. “We want a laid back carefree vibe.”

  • Question: What song speaks to us and describes us as a couple?

Ex. “We are silly and adventurous.”

  • Question: What are your guys’ hobbies? Do we have any particular songs we just freaking love?

Ex. “We love going to concerts - The Lumineers and Odesza has been our favorites.”

  • Question : Choreographed? Slow dance? Upbeat dance?

Ex. “We don’t want choreographed, but are tired of slow dances - we want people to join at the end with us.”

  • Tip: people don’t want to see 3 minutes of slow dancing. If you choose to slow dance cut it down to a minute (tell your DJ)

  • Tip: if you choose an upbeat song you can have your friends and family join at the end. Tell your wedding party to start the party by grabbing people onto the floor.

  • Tip: Don’t be afraid to be unconventional. Being unconventional is going to be more memorable for you two and your guests.

If you guys have discussed these questions and tips, hopefully you’ll have a chosen song by now.  IF NOT, here are some of my favorite non-traditional first dance songs and click here to book me to photograph your first dance!

LOVE - Kendrick Lamar

This song is gold! The beat is great, and you know your guests are going to be vibing to this song. It’s also so sweet without the traditional piano and guitar.

We Belong - Odesza remix

This song is for my people who like Indie Electronic music. It’s a romantic song that has sweet slow parts to upbeat parts. Perfect song to have everyone join in at the end.

Coming Home - Leon Bridges

Okay, I know I’m not the only one who melts when I hear Leon Bridges' voice - c’mon. This song sounds like a classic. Great for swaying and for those who like a little soul.

Paradise - Bazzi

Imagine yourself on the beach with your bestest of friends, having the time of your life. This is the song to play for that night. Just you and your boo sweet dancing to this song.

The Story - Brandi Carlisle

A freaking romantic song, please look at the lyrics! Definitely on the slower side with lyrics with so much meaning.

Feel So close - Calvin Harris

This song is a hit. Everyone knows it once they hear it. This fun bop is perfect if you want to prepare your guests for all night dancing. It’s also freaking romantic jumping around the dance floor with just you two and everyone joining in at the end.

Here is my spotify playlist for Non-Traditional First Dance Songs. I will keep to adding to it! Feel free to follow along.

Cheers,

Cindy
